Mercedes-Benz’s Sonderklasse (better known as the S-Class) has represented the pinnacle of luxury saloons for around 70 years ever since the original Ponton W108 Mercedes launched in 1954. The series continued to be developed throughout the decades with models such as the W111 and W112 Fintails, the W108 and the first car officially referred to as the S-Class, the W116. Subsequent models were and still are the world standard of luxury automobiles, in terms of both technology and build quality. There have been good S-Classes and there have been great S-Classes and the W126 generation is among the greatest of all. 

Produced from 1979-1991, the W126 struck the perfect balance, offering exceptional build quality and state of the art technology but not so advanced as to create constant problems and costs, making for a truly bulletproof model that lasts for hundreds of thousands of miles without issues. It’s for this reason that W126s have remained extremely popular. Most W126s have done well in excess of one hundred thousand miles, in W126 circles, 300,000 miles isn’t considered particularly high with many having covered well over 400, 500, even 600,000 miles. Low mileage examples in perfect condition are very few and far between which makes this particular example such an incredible opportunity. 

Supplied new in Switzerland in 1986, this stunning, Smoke Silver 560SEL is the ultimate variation of the ultimate S-Class in the ultimate condition. In all of our combined years, none of us have seen a W126 in better condition, in fact we’ve seen very few cars at all in better condition. This example has only covered 25,000 miles from new making it among the lowest mileage examples on the planet but upon seeing the car, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was delivery mileage. The underneath presents in as gleaming condition as the top and the car is also packed full of unique optional extras, some of which weren’t available in global markets. These options include a comprehensive trip computer that can tell you your average speed, range among many other functions. Another rare option is an engine block pre-heater, designed for cold climates to pre-heat the engine, set by a timer.  

The car is the definition of a time-warp, being such a pristine, unmolested, low mileage example of a car that in the majority of cases would’ve covered several hundred thousand miles and without the same care and attention that this car clearly has always been blessed with. It makes for a rarer buying opportunity than presented by most low-production supercars. It is totally exclusive, as an S-Class should be.
