This outstanding 1997 Aston Martin Vantage V550 is a rare and highly desirable example, originally commissioned by the Brunei Royal Family, renowned for their discerning taste in the finest automobiles. Ordered through Aston Martin Sales, Mayfair, and supplied in UK right-hand drive specification, this V550 exudes sophistication with its striking colour combination of Pentland Green metallic paired with a tan leather interior piped in Forest Green, a tan headlining, and Fir Green carpeting.
As one of just 240 hand-built examples of the V550 ever produced, this car represents the pinnacle of Aston Martin’s craftsmanship and engineering in the 1990s. Each V550 was a masterpiece of British design, powered by a formidable 5.3-litre V8 engine with twin Eaton superchargers, producing an astonishing 550 bhp and 550 lb-ft of torque. At the time of its release, it boasted the most powerful production engine in the world, capable of a top speed of 191 mph and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.6 seconds. Despite its incredible performance, the V550 retained a sense of effortless refinement, with a sumptuous cabin featuring Connolly leather and walnut veneer, creating a true Grand Touring experience that rivalled the best luxury cars of the era.
The Brunei Royal Family’s association with Aston Martin is legendary. During the 1980s and 1990s, the family commissioned numerous bespoke models, from one-off designs by Zagato and Pininfarina to highly customised V8 coupes. This Vantage V550, however, was ordered in factory specification, as its brutish yet elegant design perfectly met their exacting standards. Following its pre-delivery inspection by Aston Martin Works on 31st March 1998, the car was exported to Brunei, where it joined the Royal Family’s world-famous collection. Like many vehicles in their fleet, it was used sparingly and stored meticulously, a hallmark of their approach to preserving such rare and prestigious cars.
In 2017, this exceptional V550 was acquired by its current owner and brought back to the UK. Recognising its rarity and value, the new owner undertook a comprehensive recommissioning programme, sparing no expense to ensure the car was returned to the highest standard of mechanical and cosmetic condition. The extensive works included:
- A complete rebuild of the twin superchargers, ensuring peak performance
- Overhaul of the cooling system, underbody heat shields, suspension bushes, and hoses
- Genuine Aston Martin Works parts used throughout, with parts invoices exceeding £10,000
- Total recommissioning costs exceeding £50,000
The odometer now reads just 4,750 miles, reaffirming the car’s incredible preservation over its lifetime. Its stunning Pentland Green paintwork remains flawless, while the interior shows virtually no signs of wear, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail that defined Newport Pagnell’s finest creations. The rare automatic transmission further enhances the car’s usability, making it an ideal Grand Tourer that balances immense power with effortless sophistication.
Few cars of the 1990s possess the sheer presence and exclusivity of the Aston Martin Vantage V550. With its thundering performance, timeless design, and unparalleled provenance, this particular example stands out as one of the most desirable on the market today. As the modern collector market continues to recognise the significance of this iconic model, opportunities to acquire such low-mileage, meticulously preserved examples are increasingly rare.
This Vantage V550 is not just a car – it is a statement of timeless British engineering, unparalleled luxury, and raw, unbridled power. An exceptional addition to any discerning collection, it epitomises the very best of Aston Martin’s hand-built heritage.
