‘I did the trip from Brussels to Monaco in one day, actually starting as late as 11 pm. It felt strange speeding down the Autoroute at 110mph with no noise coming from the engine or road and the air conditioning keeping the temperature inside the car perfect. On reaching Monte, one impression of the Silver Shadow was dominant. I was fresh, relaxed and not in the least tired-a remarkable tribute to car after having driven 700 miles. The drive from Monaco across the Alps to Turin is a punishing test for any cars handling. but the Silver Shadow came through with flying colours. the car really inspires confidence not only because it behaves safely but also because I know it has been properly put together and won’t let me down. The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and its Bentley counterpart, the T Series were announced in October 1965 as ‘the most radically new Rolls-Royce cars for 59 years’. it was certainly true that no previous model had even hinted at chassis-less construction all independent self levelling suspension, disc brakes, high pressure hydraulic system for brakes and levelling and electrically operated seat adjustment and gear range selection. Moreover, no previous model, not even the Phantom III, had ever introduced so many new features at a single stroke. The fact that these cars changed for a fifteen-year model run, together with the fact that more than 37,000 cars were built during that time, amply testifies to the rightness of the original concept.
During the 15-year production run of the Silver Shadow and its derivatives, over 2000 individual technical and coachwork changes were an introduction, culminating in the introduction of the Silver Shadow II range in February 1977. The following month saw the policy of bestowing individual model names to body styles rather than to chassis types extended to the long wheelbase version of the standard car, which became the Silver Wraith II, in honour of the first post-war Roll-Royce.
Finished in the super chic colour combination of Walnut coachwork with matching twin coach lines to complement the Brown Everflex roof. The interior is finished in the finest Beige Connolly hide with Brown piping, Wilton carpets. Being 1 of just 2,135 Wraith II built equalling to just short of 6% of the total 37,174 cars built these cars are 1 of the rarest of the series. Supplied new via Jack Barclay, chassis number LRH 0040962 today is as bright and fresh as the day it rolled of the factory line some 39 years ago. Over its life, this particular example has been maintained regardless of any expense spared by 3 fastidious owners and the cars is a reflection of this ownership.
