Highly regarded by many to be the most stylish, well built SL to be produced, the R129 knows no bounds in revolutionising grand touring. Undeniable function with equal measures of appearance, it was only inevitable this model would be popular amongst a large spectrum of Mercedes enthusiasts, not least royalty.

Whilst the R129 was the ultimate car for most, there were further enhancements to be made by the distinguished AMG engineers. Special ordered by the Sultan of Brunei, this extraordinary 500SL was ordered in 1992 to use in Brunei, as a RHD ’93 model in the sensational combination of Agatha Grey with Black interior. It is thought that around 164 R129 500SLs were converted by AMG and with that, just a tiny percentage of those were RHD models, making this car a very special and rare car indeed.

The car was then commissioned by the Sultan to be rebuilt to full AMG specification. Starting with an 400bhp 6.0 L engine, with full AMG exhaust system, AMG suspension and uprated brakes. Visually the car was ordered to have an AMG generation 1 body-kit, which includes bespoke front/rear bumpers and flared side skits, and a desirable duck-tail spoiler. To complete the exterior, the car sits on a set of stunning 3-piece split alloys, colour matching in Agatha Grey, of course.

Naturally AMG changed the dials to accommodate new performance, but as so, left the remainder of the interior untouched, as it’s hard to improve on Mercedes 90s design and build quality perfection!

On the road this R129 is a beautiful combination of raw power delivered in a smooth, civilised way. The luxurious cabin ensures full comfort is had, but not forgetting what enhancements have been made mechanically by AMG. It would be very easy to use this car regularly, on long journeys with top-speed in mind. Over 400bhp to utilise will challenge a lot of modern cars, it truly is a special R129 to drive.

We hold this R129 6.0L AMG as a very significant model in relation to performance based Mercedes of this era. Being a Pre-Merger AMG, its raw and extravagant upgrades simply cannot be matched today making it a very rare opportunity for any collector or enthusiast to own an incredible example, with documented provenance and unrivalled performance.
