The Jaguar E Type was nothing short of a sensation when revealed to the world for the first time in 1961 at the Geneva Motor show. It was so iconic a design that Enzo Ferrari famously said “it’s the most beautiful car in the world”. With its superb lines and affordable price, the E type demand grew into iconic status, delighting enthusiasts and collectors into the next century.
E Types were offered with independent front and rear suspension, front and rear disk brakes, the rear brakes were inboard to reduce unsprung weight. Initially launched with the trusted 3.8 litre straight 6 engine from the XK 150, the early cars saw ongoing development over the next 4 years. 1965 saw the introduction of the newly developed and highly rated straight 6 cylinder, 4.2 Litre mated to a four speed full synchromesh manual gearbox; this engine stayed in production up until the early 1990’s.
Our wonderful example rolled off the production line at Browns Lane on the 22nd of September 1965 and was one of the very few original, factory painted Black cars with Red Hide interior (confirmed by the Jaguar Factory Heritage certificate on record). Still finished in it’s original livery of Masons Black coachwork with Red hide and Black soft top. Delivered to jaguar Cars New York the car was subsequently sold via the manufacturer’s agents in Chicago. The first registered owner was Mr Clark Leavitt who took delivery on Christmas Eve 1965. Incredibly the car still has the original sales invoice on file showing that Mr Leavitt part exchanged his 1963 Triumph plus cash of $5100 for his purchase. The car stayed in Mr Leavitt’s ownership until 1972 when it passed on to the second custodian. In the subsequent years the next owners would service and maintain the car with regularity, retaining a note book of detailed records and notations for all work performed on the car.
This matching numbered example oozes class in its timeless colour combination and comes accompanied by a comprehensive file of history right from the very first day, supplied also with its complete tool roll & original owners driver hand books. Ready and awaiting its to enjoy its next chapter it will surely be much appreciated by its next lucky owner.
