Our concours quality, fully restored Mark 1 3.4 litre Jaguar was built to emulate the uprated ‘works’ Mark 1 of the late Mike Hawthorn. It was supplied when new through Henly’s of London on August 19th, 1959 in BRG to its first owner J.B. Ditcham of Surbiton.
Without doubt this is one of the most professional and detailed restorations that have been undertaken by Mike Hawthorn expert, Paul Roach, proprietor of Roach Classics, who has been building Hawthorn replicas since 1988. The chrome work on the car has all been refinished to a better than new standard which reflects beautifully the stunning paintwork.
Finished in magnificent British Racing Green with Suede Green Connolly leather interior and matching wilton carpets. The woodwork has been perfectly refinished in the correct Satin lacquer finish to an outstanding standard.
The specification includes a rebuilt back axle with a 4.09:1 ratio as used by the ‘works’. The original 3.4 Litre engine was fully rebuilt and also modified to Hawthorn specification, which incorporates 9:1 pistons and a cylinder-head with D-type cams and larger valves. The car also features an incredibly rare angled ‘works’ manifold that accommodates three HD8 2 inch carburettors. Fewer than 10 of these manifolds are believed to have been built by the factory.
The gearbox is the same close ratio four-speed (with overdrive) Moss unit and the front brakes were enlarged as per the original car VDU 881. The car features body-coloured wire wheels that have increased the overall track by two inches, stiffer suspension and a custom made exhaust manifold that replicates the one originally designed by the staff at the TT Garage in 1958. The attention to detail is further exemplified by the inclusion of other modifications that Hawthorn specified such as the aftermarket rear window demister, an auxiliary reversing lamp, Raydot spot lights and a period correct ‘Pye’ radio.
Now offered fresh from its multi-year rebuild, it provides a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the very best recreations of Mike Hawthorn’s famous Mark 1 Jaguar that delivers fantastic performance in the spirit of the original. Only four owners from new.
