One of the rarest Aston Martin models is the open V8 Volante, rarer still is a Volante with the super-car performance of a Vantage engine, an engine destined to become the “X-pack” specification within the factory in 1986. This included a large bore air-box and large bore exhaust system, special cams and pistons, and the Vantage type front air dam.
Since the Vantage’s introduction in 1977 customers had requested an open version. Aston officially refused to build such a car due to concerns with safety at high speeds. However, 6 cars did the factory unofficially for special customer in the Middle East, Asia and South Africa. The first of these cars was completed in February 1981 with a Vantage engine and automatic gearbox. The second car was also an automatic built for the Sultan of Brunei, completed in August 1981. Our Aston Martin V8 Volante was the first to manual to be manufactured.
This car is 1 of what is believed to be only 6 pre production V8 Volante models fitted with the more powerful Vantage engine from new by the factory. It is 1 of 4 RHD examples produced, of which, only 2 were supplied with a manual gearbox. The only other one of these cars made for the UK was used for the UK scenes in the James Bond film, ‘The Living Daylights’, driven by Timothy Dalton as 007.
Our car has only completed 22,865 miles and comes with a comprehensive history file that chronicles nearly £75,000 worth of invoices spent on the car throughout its life to keep it in pristine condition. Some of the work included having a Ride and Handling Package fitted, new Heritage Ronal Alloy wheels, new Mohair Hood, new clutch, new sills, new aluminium radiator, the braking system has new servos and steel callipers with pads for fast road use.
Finished in a beautiful Storm Red, our Vantage Volante is visually stunning and is equally as impressive under close inspection, the Black Mohair soft-top is in superb condition as is the coachwork which is extremely straight and the chrome remains bright and un-pitted. Inside, the seats are upholstered with Magnolia leather, piped with contrasting Burgundy, as are the door cards and gearbox facia tunnel which remain in equally good condition and it has a matching Magnolia Hide Tonneau cover. Burgundy Wilton carpets piped with Magnolia leather trim also enhance the cars appearance. Adding that extra touch of class to the interior is the wooden Nardi steering wheel and gear knob. Additionally, the Volante Vantage has detachable headrests, rear seat belts, and is supplied with the original toolkit.
