The first convertible to use Aston Martin’s unique VH (Vertical/Horizontal) architecture and the first to be built at Aston Martin’s new Gaydon headquarters, the 6.0-litre V12 DB9 Volante was regarded as an elegant fast tourer rather than a raw sports model. Its suspension was softer than its Coupe counterpart and great care had gone into the design of the folding hood, which folded completely away beneath a hard tonneau that closed electrically flush with the car’s bodywork. Raising or lowering the hood took just 17 seconds at the touch of a button, yet the rear seats were unobstructed and the convertible retained the same boot space as the Coupe.
The Aston Martin DB9 was a British grand tourer first shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show. Available both in coupé and convertible body styles, the latter being known as the Volante, the DB9 was the successor of the DB7. It was the first model built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon facility.
The DB9 was originally designed by Henrik Fisker. Its chassis was the Ford-developed VH platform, whilst the engine was the 6.0-litre V12 taken from the Vanquish. The original DB9 Volante was limited to 165 mph but this limitation was removed on the upgraded 2007 model onwards. The power output was increased from 450hp to 470hp for the 2009 model year, and then to 510hp for the 2013 model year. Power could be increased further with the addition of the DB9 GT power upgrade, which consisted of a software revision, sports muffler and exhaust tip finisher. Introduced in 2015 the DB9 GT was the final edition of the DB9. Its engine had a power output of 540hp at 6,750 rpm with 457 lb⋅ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. The 0-60 mph acceleration time was 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 183 mph.
