1965 ASTON MARTIN DB5
If it is the dream of every classic car enthusiast is to discover an apparently unmolested example of an iconic model, with a wealth of paperwork recording its careful ownership, then 2131 R is a dream car!
The factory warranty card records delivery of this 5-speed example to the first owner on 28th May 1965, at a business address in Hounslow West London. This document also confirms that the car stands today in its original colour combination of Silver Birch coachwork with Red hide upholstery.
By July 1974 the car was in New Zealand and in May 1976 ownership transferred to AP Cunningham. It is very clear from the contents of the accompanying files that, during eighteen years of ownership, the Cunningham family cherished their Aston Martin and respected their responsibility to upkeep the car, as well as recording the works undertaken.
From November 1994 until 2015, still in New Zealand, the owner was a Wellington lawyer. He too ensured ongoing maintenance, refurbishment and renovation was undertaken and that the relevant invoices and correspondence was carefully filed.
The history file is a fascinating read and although the dates seem relatively recent, the pre internet correspondence, between the owners and parts suppliers in the UK, is an old fashioned curiosity. It is difficult to conceive that a disc of emails could possibly convey the emotional investment placed in 2131 R, by genuinely caring custodians, during its 50 years.
On test drive the engine starts easily from cold or when hot, running cleanly and pulling powerfully. Gear-changes are excellent and the five-speed gearbox and axle are quiet. The brakes too function efficiently.
Bodywork is extremely good and close inspection of the underside shows an extremely clean example, whilst the interior is extraordinary in the lovely originality of the leather upholstery and truly transports one to a bygone era.
Rarely are cars such as this available on the open market. We anticipate unprecedented interest from the moment its sale is announced. Viewing is easily arranged here in Kew and facilities can be made available for mechanical inspection.
