Following in the footsteps of Ford and their incredible success with their "pony car", the Ford  Mustang, Chevrolet launched their own rival in 1967, the incredibly stylish Camaro. Its lines were more muscular than those of its Ford counterpart and engine choices varied greatly, from a 3.8 Litre Straight 6 all the way to a 7.0 V8. Surprisingly, one of the top performance variants of the original Camaro came with the second smallest V8 offered. That car was the Z/28 with its 4.9 Litre, 302 cubic inch V8. The factory quoted power as 290bhp as can be read on the air filter. The true power figure however was far greater than Chevrolet ever confessed with most believing power was closer to 400bhp! Underquoting performance figures was standard at General Motors, the reason being that they would quote less than 1 horsepower per cubic inch for both insurance premium calculations and racing classification.

Note use of the word racing as that is where the Z-28 shines. Not designed as a more typical, powerful boulevard cruiser, the Z/28 was built to be a "race-ready" car sold in Chevrolet dealers across the country. Think of it as the closest rival to the Shelby GT350. It's 302 V8 was designed for competing in the 5.0 class of the Trans Am racing series. Ford didn't come up with its own head to head competitor, the Ford Mustang Boss 302 until 1969, giving GM a considerable head start. Along with its hot racing designed engine, the car came with power front disc brakes, upgraded suspension, 4-speed Muncie close ratio transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle.

Owing to their racing focus, the Z/28 was sold in limited numbers, representing only about 4% of total 1st generation Camaro production. With the passage of time, many of these Z/28s have disappeared and so they very rarely come up for sale, rarer so on this side of the pond.

It therefore makes this car, imported to the UK 51 years ago in 1974 all the more special. It was imported by none other than Stuart Graham, famed racing driver who won the British Saloon car championships twice and notably raced Camaros to considerable success in Britain. Upon arrival in the UK, the car had covered 16,000 miles from new and in those 50 years since covered a further 6,000 miles, bringing its total mileage to an astonishingly low 22,000 miles from new! Among the car's previous owners was a famous race driver and broadcaster who recently displayed the car in the Levitt Concours at the Hampton Court Concours of Elegance.

Presented in quite possibly the best colour offered on the Z/28, British Green, it is without a doubt one of the finest examples you could ever wish to find in truly concours condition and most importantly of all, matching numbers! These Camaro Z/28s are hugely coveted globally and they seldom come up for sale in such great condition as this.
