Throughout the 1950s, Maserati had achieved extraordinary results in Grand Prix and sports car racing around the world despite operating with a budget many times smaller than its competitors.
It was becoming increasingly clear that to fund Maserati’s racing activities, the company would have to go beyond producing virtually one-off road cars and move into the business of production road cars.
The 3500 GT was powered by a 220-brake horsepower, 3,485-cc inline six-cylinder developed from Maserati’s successful sports racing cars. The engine was accompanied by an all-synchromesh ZF S4-17 four-speed gearbox. Available as either a 2+2 coupé or convertible, the most popular specification being the Carrozzeria Touring coupé with the Milanese coachbuilder’s aluminium Superleggera technique being used. With this specification, it is very easy to see why so many commentators in period drew direct comparisons with Aston Martin’s highly regarded DB4.
DD Classics is pleased to offer this beautiful and rare RHD 3500 GT coupé, chassis number 902, was delivered to the official Maserati concessionaire for the United Kingdom, Colin Murray of Fleetwood in Lancashire and sold to a Mr. R Whitehead in Lancashire. The 3500 GT found its second loving owner in the form of Mr. Bolinbroke, who purchased the car in 1968. After spending a brief period abroad, the Maserati was brought back into the UK in 1979, since then it has had just 4 former owners and DD Classics had the pleasure to sell this fabulous car to its final owner in 2015.
An official letter from Maserati in 1988 confirms the 3500 GT still retains its beautiful original colour scheme of Grey with a Red leather interior, the only alteration is a stunning Ruby Red roof which greatly enhances the cars overall appearance. Inside the lovely Red leather remains soft and subtle and its matching Red carpets appear unworn. Our 3500 GT also retains a stylish Motorola radio.
Accompanying the car is a wonderful history folder that includes photographic documentation of the cars restoration, a large number of invoices detailing works completed over the years and numerous previous MOT’s, including one that was issued in 1983. Also included within the file are the Maserati 3500 GT’s owners hand books and operating manual.
Right-hand drive examples are exceptionally rare, Maserati built just 40 RHD cars in total. This is a fantastic opportunity to own a rare piece of automotive history and a car that has clearly been fastidiously maintained throughout its life.
