Introduced in late 1969 as a prestige model to supplant the somewhat underpowered six-cylinder 280SE, the V8-powered, W111-Series 280SE 3.5 in both coupe and convertible form was of immediate appeal to wealthy customers who were accustomed to having the best quality and workmanship available in an automobile.
This is, without doubt, the most beautiful post-war Cabriolet Mercedes Benz has built to present. Finished in Clark Gable’s favourite colour combination of Tobacco coachwork with the two-tone Cognac and Burr Walnut woodwork throughout. Fitted with the desirable Automatic gearbox, Power steering, Electric windows, Behr air conditioning, Becker Mexico with Hirschmann electric aerial and white wall tyres.
Delivered new to the USA and resided in the sunny state of Florida prior to DD Classics acquisition. Recent restoration works include the total re-trim of the interior in the correct shade of tobacco hide, back to OEM specification by marque specialists D-Class. The work did not stop there; the chrome and woodwork were also beautifully restored as well. These cars were the last hand built models from the Mercedes Benz famous Sindelfingen factory and ooze timeless class and sophistication.
This particular example is exclusively featured in the May edition of “Classic & Sports Car” magazine by automotive journalist Martin Buckley.
